Ex-Celtic Player of the Year quits manager job after winning the league

Robbie Keane has parted ways with Maccabi Tel Aviv as manager, after just one season in charge of the Israeli side.

The former Ireland internationalist clinched the league by 11 points in what was a successful debut campaign, but the Irish Independent reports the ex-Celtic player could not be convinced to extend his stay.

Speaking to the Irish Independent, Keane said: "It has been a tough decision for me to leave Maccabi Tel Aviv FC.

"I would like to thank all the players, coaches, owners and especially the fans for making this an unforgettable season.

"I am very proud of everything we have achieved together as a team and, of course, most proud of the hard work and dedication which resulted in us winning the league and Toto Cup (League Cup) thus guaranteeing Maccabi a Champions League spot next season.

"To finish my first season with two trophies is very special for me and my staff. I wish everyone involved at the club all the best for the season ahead."

During his playing days, Keane joined Celtic in the January transfer window of the trophy-less and ultimately disappointing 2009/10 season.

Despite only playing 15 games for the club, the Irishman's 16 goals in all competitions (12 in the league alone) saw him win Player of the Year for the campaign – an award voted for by the fans.

Then Celtic manager Tony Mowbray was dismissed before the conclusion of the 2009/10 season, and Keane departed the club following the end of loan contract in the summer of 2010.

As manager of Tel Aviv, Keane helped the side finish 11 points ahead of Maccabi Haifa, and lift last season's League Cup .

Tel Aviv also reached the knockout stages of the Europa Conference League, where they were knocked out by eventual winners Olympiacos.
