Former Bristol City forward Louis Britton has agreed a deal to join Irish side Cork City until the end of the Irish season.
The 21-year-old was looking for a new club after he was told by the Robins he would be released following the expiration of his contract at the end of this month.
Britton only returned from his loan spell at fellow Irish side Waterford on Tuesday, where he scored an impressive 10 goals in 17 matches. Danny Searle's side were hopeful of keeping him at the club but he has instead opted to join their league rivals.
The announcement has been met by anger from Waterford supporters on social media who appear to have been left frustrated by Britton's decision to sign for Ireland's first division table-toppers. The announcement on Cork's official Twitter page was met with flood of comments of snake emojis.
Britton commented on Twitter following the news: "Delighted to have signed! Can't wait to get going. Time to push on."
Unlike the English football pyramid, the Irish season competes from February until October, with the final round of fixtures on the 21st. Britton could then return to England by the New Year when the winter transfer window opens.
Britton joined City from Mangotsfield in 2019 and immediately had loan spells with Yate Town and Bath City. He made one league appearance for the Robins, scoring on his debut from the bench in a 3-1 defeat against Brentford just over a year ago.
The striker enjoyed a prolific campaign for the Under-23s last season, scoring 16 goals and looked prime to make more of an impact in the first-team this campaign following further loans at Torquay, Stockport and Woking.
However, Nigel Pearson all-but ruled him out of his plans in September when he declared Britton didn't have the levels of fitness required to deal with training and matches at Championship level.
It was previously understood how both Port Vale and Barnsley were just two of the clubs interested in signing Britton on a free transfer.
Britton was one of six names to leave City on a free transfer this summer including winger Callum O'Dowda. Youngsters Khari Allen, Barney Soady and Nathaniel Williams were also released while centre-back Robbie Cundy joined Barnsley on a free transfer after opting against signing a new deal.
