NEW DELHI: While considering the old age of real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal, a city court on Tuesday directed their release against the jail term already undergone by them in judicial custody in an evidence tampering case related to the 1997 Uphaar cinema fire tragedy.
The court said the seven-year jail term awarded to them by a magistrate court was “not only harsh, onerous, but also disproportionate to the offence committed”. The whole tone and tenor of the impugned order by the trial court shows that it was by all parameters punitive and retributive in nature to teach a lesson to the appellants (Ansals).
