Londoners could be hit with a £100 fine for drinking in public under a new rule that has come into force today.
With the capital expected to swelter through another July heatwave, anyone planning to enjoy a drink in a park or on the street is being warned to know the rules before cracking open a can.
The new measures are part of a borough-wide crackdown by Camden Council on anti-social behaviour linked to public drinking.
It comes after residents and businesses raised concerns during a public consultation earlier this year.
Now, the council has introduced a new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), in a clampdown on drinking irresponsibly.
Here's everything you need to know.
What are the new rules?
Under the new rules, anyone who is deemed to be drinking irresponsibly in a public space could be asked to stop by police or council enforcement officers.
The new restrictions will cover all streets and public spaces in the borough apart from Hampstead Heath, which is managed by City of London Corporation.
The rules apply to the borough of Camden only following a consultation with residents and businesses.
They came into force today (July 1).
How will they be enforced?
Police and council officers will enforce the new rules through a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO).
From today, they will have increased powers to act against anyone irresponsibly drinking alcohol in public.
People could be asked to give up the alcohol they have and/or to stop drinking if approached.
What happens if you breach the rules?
Breaching the new conditions is a criminal offence and would result in a fine of £100.
Anyone found committing the offence will have 28 days to pay the fine or face prosecution.
Does this mean that drinking outdoors is banned?
No. There is no outright ban on drinking in parks and other public places.
But this change means that police and council officers will have the power to order people or groups to stop drinking alcohol if their behaviour is considered anti-social.
Councillor Adam Harrison of Camden Council said: “We’re committed to making Camden feel a safer place for everyone.
“This isn’t about a casual drink in the park with friends, this is about clamping down on anti-social and irresponsible drinking that we know negatively impacts residents, businesses and visitors in Camden.
“While many people drink alcohol responsibly in the borough, we’re listening to reports and experiences of intimidating behaviour towards others – and taking action.
“Our enforcement officers patrol the borough seven days a week, deterring criminals and looking out for your safety. If you have concerns about anti-social behaviour in your area, we’re here for you and urge you to report it. Every report matters and will be taken seriously.”
