Everything to know about Dublin Horse Show 2022 as it returns to RDS after two years

Saddle up because the Dublin Horse Show has finally returned to RDS after two long years.

The 147th show kicked off this morning and will take place over the next five days and it will include national and international show jumping competitions as well as entertainment throughout.

According to RTE, Horse Show Director Pat Hanly said: “There has been great support and energy around it. I think Covid has given people time and space to renew their interest in horses and the show is hugely important nationally and internationally."

The event was first held in 1864 and was cancelled due to Covid in 2020 and 2021. Now it's back, so here's all you need to know:

What will be at the event?

Over 1,600 horses and ponies from around Ireland and the world will be competing for five days in showjumping. There will also be Irish Draught classes, pony club games and side saddle competitions.

What's the most popular event?

The Puissance which takes place on Saturday, 20 August. This is where the world's best showjumpers take place in jumps where the height increases in every round.

What else can I do?

This event is perfect for equestrians as there are over 300 stalls selling products like harnesses, and saddles. There’s also live demonstrations and talks on equine-assisted therapy and personal wellness.

There will be plenty of entertainment for kids too. There is a dedicated Kids Zone that will feature animals from Woolly Farms, inflatable attractions, an activity zone and face-painting.

What's on each day?

Today is set to bring a lot of pageantry and junior competitions, while tomorrow is Ladies Day. Heavier breeds take centre stage on Friday and the Puissance is on Saturday. The Longines Grand Prix of Ireland has the largest prize fund and will be on this Sunday.

How do I get there?

You can get to the RDS via Dublin bus routes 4, 7, 7a and 18. The venue is a short walk from the Lansdowne Road and Sandymount DART stations. There is also car parking available at UCD and Muckross College and there are free shuttle buses for to and from the venue.

Where can I get tickets?

You can still get tickets here and they’re priced at €23 for an adult, €17 for a child, student or OAP and €65 for a family of five.
