The Chargers got embarrassed by the Raiders on Thursday night while the entire nation watched.
To recap Los Angeles’ 63-21 loss to Las Vegas, here is everything to know.
It was over when...
After the Raiders scored their first touchdown on their first possession. Just a complete meltdown.
Game notes
- The Chargers’ 42 points allowed are the most allowed in the first half in a game in franchise history.
- The Chargers allowed the most points in a single game in franchise history.
- The Chargers turned the ball over five times, two of which were taken back for touchdowns.
Quick hits
- Easton Stick made his first NFL start and for the most part, it wasn’t pretty as he turned the ball over three times, two fumbles lost and an interception. But he did make some good throws late in the game. Stick finished 23 of 32 passing for 257 yards, three touchdowns and a pick.
- Isaiah Spiller led the running backs in carries with 16, which he turned into 50 yards (3.1 yards per carry). This was the first extensive look at Spiller and I thought he played well. Spiller won’t be 23 years old until next season, so he will be plenty fresh for the soon-to-be new regime.
- Joshua Kelley had five rushes for 22 yards, but he lost a fumble early in the game. Austin Ekeler took a backseat in carries, finishing with five for nine yards. Ekeler was more involved in the passing game, as he had four receptions on six targets for 29 yards.
- Starting with the defense, the Raiders had one of the worst rushing offenses entering this game, but you wouldn’t have been able to tell with how they ran all over the Chargers. Los Angeles gave up 124 yards and two touchdowns, with an average of 4.8 yards per carry.
- There was no pressure applied on Aidan O’Connell, and he took advantage of the time he had in the pocket. O’Connell threw for 248 yards and four touchdowns.
- Derius Davis fumbled the ball early in the game, and what was thought to be a redeeming punt return touchdown resulted in a holding penalty called on Stone Smartt for a hold on the…Raiders punter.
- Yes, there’s nothing to play for, but I haven’t seen a team look so uninspired. Brandon Staley’s seat was very warm coming into this game and I had the thought that he would be given the rest of the season to be the Chargers’ head coach, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s gone in the morning after such a disastrous showing in the front of the entire nation.
- Beyond that, the state of the roster falls on Tom Telesco, who will also be considered to be let go of.
