Everyone is making the same joke about Kate's extraordinary Coronation outfit

Royal watchers were left wowed by some of the regal looks on show at King Charles III's Coronation, from Princess Anne's feathered hat and velvet cloak ensemble to Princess Beatrice's gold statement headband.

Two outfits in particular stole the show, with the Princess of Wales' and leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt's' style choices sparking jokes about the exact same thing.

Kate stunned in a breathtaking ivory Alexander McQueen gown, complete with intricate silver embroidery depicting flowers from each of the four home nations.

Surprising fans by not wearing a tiara, Kate instead chose to wear a Jess Collett x Alexander McQueen headpiece with silver bullion, crystal, and silver threadwork three-dimensional leaf embroidery.

Mordaunt, who could be seen carrying the jewelled Sword of State as part of her role as lord president of the privy council, also looked striking as she made her grand entrance into Westminster Abbey.

The Conservative Party MP was clad in a teal dress with matching cape, complete with a Jane Taylor headband embroidered with a gold fern pattern.

Viewers at home were left blown away by Mordaunt's dramatic look, which many social media users viewed as rather sci-fi in style, making comparisons to everything from Star Trek to The Handmaid's Tale.

One amazed person tweeted: "Just catching up on Coronation shenanigans. Penny Mordaunt looked amazing - like a cross between a Star Wars commander and someone from Game of Thrones. Wow!"

A second individual agreed: "Penny Mordaunt should be giving Chewbacca his medal".

Similar fantasy references were also made about Kate's eye-catching attire, with one royal fan remarking: "Is it just me, or is Princess of Wales Kate Middleton looking like 'Cersei Lannister'?"

Drawing reference from the world of Marvel comics, another wrote: "I mean, look at Kate Middleton. She looks like she's auditioning for Captain Britain."

With both these out-of-this-world outfits in the same room, viewers couldn't help but joke there must be some sort of epic battle on the horizon, with a dual straight out of a Star Wars film.

Sharing side-by-side pics of Kate and Mordaunt, one Twitter user jested: "Two women, rivals for the empire of the galaxy."

Another chuckled: "Exactly my thoughts. Why has no one put Star Wars theme music to it?"

A third commented: "The way she handled those swords, my money's on Penny."
