Residents in a Cardiff neighbourhood have slammed the "disgusting" piles of rubbish left by university students moving out of their houses at the end of term. Cathays residents have called for an intervention from Cardiff Council to help alleviate the "frustrating" problem that they claim happens every year.
The council said it has been working closely with universities to ensure students dispose of their waste correctly. During this year's move-out period, it provided additional facilities and cleansing resources, including a pop-up recycling centre and a pickup recycling takeaway van. Additional collections have also been organised for this weekend.
Verity Free, who has lived in Cathays for three years, shared four photos of huge piles of waste dumped outside houses and around a public bin taken during a walk to Bute Park on Sunday, July 3, morning. She claims the rubbish attracts "swarms of seagulls and rats the size of cats".
