Every word Graham Potter said on Chelsea vs Wolves, Silva absence, Broja, January window, more

Is that the ideal result, given you took control of the game early and kept it?

"It wasn't easy, that is for sure. They never are these Premier League games, especially as we played on Wednesday in a big game. To recover and prepare isn't straightforward, but we have a good group that are committed, that are together, that are fighting for each other, so that is positive. I thought we played well in the first half; disappointed not to score earlier than we did.

"The goal was important when it came, and then credit to Wolves. They started the second half well. We had to adjust a little bit and then scored again at a good time. Maybe that was the breathing space we needed in the game and for Armando [Broja] to finish it off was great for us. It's not a straightforward game. We had to fight for it and credit to the boys because they did that."

Can you talk us through the seven changes today?

"Thiago [Silva] had a heavy cold at the start of the week but played against Milan. Two days to recover is really short for him, so we didn't want to take the chance there. Ben Chilwell playing three games in a week after recovering from an ACL injury. That wouldn't have been the smartest thing to do to put him out there, especially when we've got Marc Cucurella.

"Reece James had a dead leg that wasn't fully recovered yesterday, so we wanted to give him a bit of extra time and use him at the back end of the game rather than the start. Obviously, we missed Wesley [Fofana] and Mateo Kovacic, three games in a week for him would've been too much as he has been nursing a knee problem. So, again we can use Jorginho and Ruben [Loftus-Cheek].

"Raheem [Sterling] has had a load of football this season, so we thought it would be good for him to have a breather and help us at the back end of the game if we needed him. It's similar with Auba [Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang]. Even though he is in a great moment and forwards rely on rhythm, he hasn't had that much football previous to coming to Chelsea and has had an injury.

"It felt like today was a good chance to give him a breather, and if we needed him at the back end of the game, we could've used him. That was the thinking process."

It sounds like you were lucky to get a team out…

"Well, you did ask!"

Is it a testament to the squad you've got here, though?

"It's a credit to the players because it's a good group here. We can't succeed with just eleven players, and I don't think it's right to just keep eleven going until they fall down, get injured and then we play the next ones. That is not good for the group dynamic. At the same time, I am conscious that if we lose today, you'd have come with me asking why I didn't play Aubameyang, that is how it is.

"But as long as the reason is there, as long as I know in my head why we've made the decision, someone has to take it. Today it's worked out well, and credit to the players because the group is really together and pushing for each other. It's important everybody knows we can't do it with just eleven."

Is rotation going to be like this because of the run until the World Cup?

"It won't necessarily have to be like this. You have to take every situation on its own. But if you're playing three games a week, going from Champions League and then two days later to Premier League, you have to make a decision around fresh players, players that are determined and desperate to play, there is that aspect.

"We've got a good group here, it's a good squad with lots of competition, and you need people fighting for each other, supporting each other, wanting to play and ready to help. We saw that today. Kai [Havertz] scored, Christian [Pulisic] scored, and Armando scored, so that's really pleasing."

That was an important goal for Armando, wasn't it?

"It is, I think it's his first. He is going to have an impact off the bench, and you can see what he brings to the team. He is having to be patient, but he is working hard in training, and I think that goal was a big one for him."

Some of your predecessors have struggled with the size of the squad here. How important is it to make everyone feel valued and keep them on board?

"My experience is that players, no matter the level, want to play, and you have to respect that. At the same time, it's part of the deal with coming to a club like Chelsea that there is a lot of competition, and you have to fight to play in the team, be ready to help the team, and be ready to play your role.

"All you can do as a head coach is communicate the reasons why and sort of admitting that you're not always right. But we are doing it with good intentions, and it is important we have a strong group, a strong collective because it's really difficult to achieve anything without that."

How important have you found a group of academy graduates within the first-team squad?

"They're vital. They bring an understanding of the club, of the culture of the club, its demands and what is required in terms of the environment. They've come through a fantastic education in the academy. They are good people and good footballers. Our job is to help them maximise their potential, which is really exciting."

With the injuries in midfield and contracts running down, will we see any midfielders come in during the transfer window?

"I've not thought about the transfer window. Thanks for reminding me of that! I've been busy with three matches in a week, but my answer is always that any club has to be, when the window is open, looking for options and how they can improve. But my job as head coach is to help the players that are here and help them improve.

"You can see from the team today that there are a lot of positives, but we are not at our maximum, but that is exciting as well because we can help the team and individuals get better."
