Every word from Gio van Bronckhorst's Rangers press conference as he demands fearless Napoli approach

The pressure is on for Gio van Bronckhorst but he was a characteristically cool customer as he spoke to the press ahead of Wednesday's trip to face Napoli.

Rangers ' dreary draw with 10-man Livingston at the weekend saw them slump to four points behind Celtic and they'll almost certainly go crashing out of Europe altogether if they lose in Naples on Wednesday night. But they're been well accustomed to European upsets under Van Bronckhorst and the Dutchman seemed quietly confident his side can get the result they need to keep their fate in their own hands.

Should they better Ajax's result against Liverpool, they'll head into next week's showdown at Ibrox knowing a victory would send them into the Europa League knockout stages. And after four damaging defeats to kick off their return to the Champions League, that's a chance they will be desperately keen to take to restore their reputation as a strong European side.

Here is everything Van Bronckhorst said in his pre-match press conference.

Your team is coming under pressure - what do your players have to do to relieve that?

"If you don't have the results, which is really hard in the Champions League because of the opposition. The best thing is to get a good result.

"That's what we want to achieve in a really difficult stadium against a good team. To get the confidence you have to give a good performance and of course something positive out of the game."

Napoli are in great form - are they the wrong team to face right now?

"It is a team who have won the last 11 games against tough opposition, not just in the Champions League but in Serie A. We know the opposition, we know they have quality but for us it's a chance to have a good performance against a really good team like we did at home."

Injury update?

"First of all, Glen didn't make it. He was working hard to be ready but this game comes too early. He will hopefully be ready for the weekend. We have some players who are not eligible for Europe so we didn't take them.

"We have Rabbi Matondo fit. He went off at the weekend but he's trained and is fit to travel which is good news. You have to look at the team and ask which is best for tomorrow.

"Leon King is better. He was feeling sick on Saturday at half-time and had to come off.

"We have a very demanding schedule and we have to rotate the squad because we need everyone fresh and that's a balance you need to find. Tomorrow you will see some changes."

Is this game where you find out what your players are made of?

"The character of players you always have that, especially in moments. We had a draw at the weekend and also the last games in the Champions League games have been very positive in parts of games.

"All that matters is the result though. The character is very important. If that's there you have a chance to get a positive result.

"Napoli will come at us but we have to be go out there and don't be fearful. Just go out and reach the level we can reach and see at the end of the game if we have a positive result or not."

Memories of Maradona?

"He means a lot to me and so many people. The 1986 World Cup, I was 11. I was talking about the games Napoli played with Maradona against Ruud Gullit and Marco van Baten and I can remember watching it on Sunday afternoon.

"I met him twice. It was one of those moments in life when you meet your idol up close. What he's done for football was immense. When I speak about him it's only good memories and it's good to see this stadium.

"He had beautiful times here. It's really nice to be in the city where he made his name. He's one of my idols from the past and still is."

How do you approach the game knowing a point can keep you alive?

"The game management is very important. We are facing a team who attacks really fast and well with quality players all over the pitch so in these environments you have to be defensively solid but find the moments in transition or build-up to attack well.

"If you come here and only defend for 90 minutes it's waiting for the damage to be done. We have to take our moments to be dangerous as well. You have to start well to stay in the game so you can push to get a positive result in the second half."
