Leeds has thousands of bars, pubs, restaurants and shops across the area. They include corner shops, bakeries, sandwich shops, supermarkets and so on.
Every business which sells food in England, Wales and Northern Ireland requires a Food Hygiene Rating, conducted by the Food Standards Agency. The Agency visit a premises and rate the hygiene standards out of five.
Five means that standards are very good, zero means urgent improvement is required. Businesses are inspected every so often to check their cleanliness and the ratings are published so that customers know how hygienic the food preparation and storage areas are.

People like to know these ratings so they can make a judgement about giving a venue their service. Poor food hygiene can lead to quite serious illnesses if it is not managed.
We've put together a list of all the bars, restaurants and shops across Leeds that were given a one-star rating this year by The Food Standards Agency. Each business was contacted to give a response to their ratings but none replied.
To get a one-star rating means that major improvement is necessary. Venues will need to prove they store and handle food safely, keep a clean environment and prove that staff have a knowledge about food safety to get this rating up.
