Everton and Newcaslte played out an entertaining 0-0 draw at Goodison Park. The visitors were the more controlling side and should have won the game after James Tarkowski dragged Sandro Tonali down in the box midway through the first half.

It was a clear penalty kick and, following a VAR intervention, the visitors had the opportunity to go ahead. Newcastle were awarded the spot kick but Anthony Gordon’s effort was kept out by a fabulous save from Jordan Pickford.

Gordon was a threa throughout and made life hard for his old club with his pace and skill at the top of the match. If truth it was an even contest.

Both managers attempted to change the momentum with substitutes from the bench but they had little effect and neither team could press on to win.

Relive the action from Goodison Park and with our live blog below:

Full-time! Everton 0-0 Newcastle

90+4 mins: Nothing to separate the teams. A thrilling contest at Goodison Park ends in a draw with neither team managing to break the other down.

The big moment was Anthony Gordon’s penalty kick that Jordan Pickford managed to keep out. Newcastle couldn’t find a way through and the teams had to settle for a point apiece.

Everton 0-0 Newcastle

87 mins: Newcastle are seeing more of the ball, trying to patiently break Everton down. It’s not happening for them though as as this game flies towards its conclusion it seems more than likely to end in a draw.

Everton 0-0 Newcastle

81 mins: Close!

Almiron twists into space and feeds a fine pass into the penalty area for Anthony Gordon. He turns towards goal and lets fly on a powerful shot.

The ball is always rising though and sails over the top.

Everton 0-0 Newcastle

78 mins: There is a feeling that some late drama will effect and determine the game. Everton have had seven chances and may only need a couple more to get through Newcastle who themselves are determined to collect three points.

Neither team can get a grip on the ball in the final third at present though.

Everton 0-0 Newcastle

72 mins: Tino Livramento and Sean Longstaff are called on by Eddie Howe as he tries to bring the ball match Newcastle’s way. They come on to replace Kieran Trippier, who may have a knock, and Sandro Tonali.

Will we see a winning goal?

Everton 0-0 Newcastle

69 mins: The Everton fans are understandably outraged by that decision but it seems fair on review. The referee saw it in real time and didn’t give a penalty anyway.

Everton are starting to grow in belief now though.

Everton 0-0 Newcastle

66 mins: Dwight McNeil recovers the ball off Sandro Tonali and slides the ball into the box for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He shoots and forces a low save out of Nick Pope who palms the ball back into play. Calvet-Lewin looks for another shot but Dan Burn leans across him and the striker gets tangled up.

Everton want a penalty but VAR shows that Calvert-Lewin kicked the back of Burn’s legs so it’s adjudged not to be a spot kick.
