Match report: Everton 1-0 Manchester United

Premier League: Anthony Gordon brought his club a precious victory in their increasingly fraught attempt to avoid relegation as Manchester United’s top-four prospects suffered a serious setback, writes Andy Hunter from Goodison Park.

Ralf Rangnick speaks ...

On United’s lack of ideas: “It’s not only creativity,” he says in an interview with the BBC. “I think we had enough creative payers on the pitch. It’s also about being physical enough in the final third, being physical and trying to score a goal. We didn’t have enough players in the box.”

On his side’s top four hopes: “Difficult,” he says. “As long as we don’t win our own games it doesn’t make sense to hope for good results from the other teams.

Frank Lampard speaks

On the win for his side: “I’m very proud,” he tells BT Sport. “You know, these are pressure times. Where we are is the reality of the situation but at Goodison we’ve been good. That’s our fifth win in seven [at home] and we’ve been keeping clean sheets. Away from home is a different aspect but when we come together, fans and players alike, then we’re hard to beat here.

“It all starts with our physical output, our contact, our fighting spirit ... because that’s what fans demand here. And rightly so and they got today from minute one to minute 95.”

Fabian Delph speaks ...

On the result: “Coming off the back of the last game there was a lot of disappointment,” he tells BT Sport’s Des Kelly. “Heads were down, as you’d expect. We came into it with a good game plan. We had to stick together at times, but we did that and got the three points.

“We expected them to have chances. They’re a top team with top players. It was about sticking together and riding the storm. We managed to do that. It’s a massive relief for the players, management and everyone associated with Everton.”

On Frank Lampard’s half-time talk: “He said just to stay in the game. We finally felt compact. We knew they were going to dominate the ball, so it was about staying compact and communicating and riding that wave.”

On his own performance and fitness: “It was good for me to get out there. I’m always wanting to help the lads. It was good to do that today, but I don’t think I’ll train for a week!”

On Everton’s hopes of staying up: “It’s a massive fight. One game at a time. We’re not going to get carried away. The next game is about getting points on the table, that’s our main focus and to stay up.”

What does Gary Neville think? The latest in an ongoing series ...

Credit where it’s due department: Frank Lampard took a bit of a gamble starting Fabian Delph today but was rewarded with a Man of the Match performance from the midfielder.

He was one of several players who impressed alongside Anthony Gordon, Vitalii Mykolenko, Allan, Alex Iwobi, Richarlsion. All in all it was a good team effort from Everton but in truth Manchester United helped make them look far better than they actually are. The outfit from Old Trafford are a shambles and no mistake.

90+5 min: Another ball into the Everton box - Michael Keane boots it upfield. It’s all over at Goodison Park.

90+4 min: United win a free-kick inside their own penalty area for an innocuous Iwobi challenge on Maguire. They get the ball forward, sling it into the Everton box and Pickford punches clear.

90+3 min: Pickford to the rescue! Harry Maguire’s downward header bounces kindly for Ronaldo, who rifles the ball goalwards. It takes a slight deflection off Michael Keane and Pickford saves with his knees.

90+1 min: Everton win a throw-in deep in United territory and are in no great rush to take it. When they eventually do, the ball is lumped forward towards Ronaldo, who is immeditely dispossessed.

89 min: Everton’s fans sing the praises of their players in general and then Anthony Gordon in particular as the clueless rabble that is this Manchester United side huff and puff in search of an equaliser. They look completely out of ideas, if indeed they had any to begin with. We’ll have five minutes of added time.

87 min: Cristiano Ronaldo gets booked ... I think for kicking the ball away in a fit of petulance. He’s done nothing else of note in this second half.

86 min: As the steards move into position for the final whistle, Jordan Pickford gets booked for time-wasting over a goal kick.

84 min: Everton substitution: Abdoulaye Doucoure on for Fabian Delph, who gets a generous and well-deserved round of applause. He’s played very well in his first game back since ... whenever.

83 min: Gray blocks brilliantly from Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the United right-back chested down a cross to the far post and unleashed a volley.

82 min: Fabian Delph wellies the ball clear from the edge of his own six-yard box as Manchester United try to find an opening in a crowded penalty area.

80 min: Pickford quickly gets down to his right to save a low Paul Pogba daisycutter that was arrowing towards the near post.

76 min: There are screams for a spot-kick as Anthony Gordon chases a loose ball and has a “coming together” with Alex Telles in the Manchester United penalty area. The Everton youngster goes to ground but no penalty is forthcoming. There was contact but no foul, in this impartial observer’s opinion but I’d need to see it again.

75 min: Now Jadon Sancho is rolling around on the ground holding his knee. Anthony Gordon gets booked for the rash challenge.

73 min: Iwobi leaves Fernandes grimacing and clutching the back of one knee with a crunching tackle, as Everton summon their Dogs of War spirit of yore. They’re showing plenty of character today and the Goodison Park crowd appreciate their efforts ... for now.

72 min: Everton substitution: Demarai Gray on for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

70 min: Manchester United win two corners in quick succession. From the second, Elanga shoots over. Free-kick for Everton for a handball in the penalty area.

69 min: Harry Maguire gives the ball away and Anthony Gordon advances to the byline. He pulls the ball back into the penalty area, trying to tee up Richarlison or Calvert-Lewin. Aaron Wan-Bissaka clears.

68 min: Paul Pogba is penalised for bundling Dominic Calvert-Lewin off the ball. The Frenchman is not happy and shapes to punch the ball away in frustration, only to remember he’s already on a yellow card.

67 min: Alex Telles slings a cross into the Everton box from the left touchline. It’s far too close to Jordan Pickford, who gathers comfortably.

65 min: Richarlison runs into a stout wall of red resistence in midfield, losing the ball to Paul Pogba.

64 min: Manchester United double-substitution: Juan Mata and Anthony Elanga on for Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford.

63 min: A poor cross from Wan-Bissaka is hacked into the stand by Ben Godfrey.

62 min: Michael Keane leaps above Cristiano Ronaldo to head a ball from deep clear of the Everton penalty area.

59 min: Manchester United corner. They go short and a Bruno Fernandes attempted cross is blocked by Richarlison. The Brazilian, Fabian Delph and Vitalii Mykolenko are working their socks off for the Everton cause.

54 min: Lindelof blocks a shot from Gordon as Everton start to wrestle control of this game from their increasingly hapless visitors.

53 min: Mykolenko wins Everton another corner, getting the better of Wan-Bissaka down the left. This time Ben Godfrey meets Gordon’s excellent inswinger but heads over the bar.

52 min: Everton win another corner and the delivery from Gordon is as good as ever. Harry Maguire clears superbly with a meaty thunk off his big slab-head.

50 min: Paul Pogba is booked for a late lunge on Anthony Gordon.

49 min: Pickford gets caught in no-man’s land as Rashford runs on to a ball over the top into the Everton penalty area. The Manchester United striker misses the ball completely when the goal was at his mercy.

48 min: Happy to do his share of the grunt work in defence, Richarlison gets back to prevent Aaron Wan-Bissaka from getting a cross in. Goal kick for Everton.

Second half: Everton 1-0 Manchester United

46 min: “Everton have not been in this position and lost for six years,” reveals Jake Humphrey on BT Sport. Despite a couple of decent first half chances, Manchester United have been pretty dismal today. They’ll need to up their game considerably to turn this around. But then, it is Everton, who are more capable than most of blunderbussing themselves in both feet.

Half-time: Everton 1-0 Manchester United

Peep! An absorbing first half that was extremely low on quality from either side draws to a close. Having called on Jordan Pickford to save their bacon a couple of times, Everton lead by the only game so far, scored by Anthony Gordon with the help of a wicked deflection off Harry Maguire.

45 min: Everton corner. Anthony Gordon takes it. David De Gea punches clear.

43 min: On the edge of his own six-yard box, Mykolenko does well to steer a Telles cross from the left over the bar as Ronaldo lurked with deadly intent behind him. Richarlison clears from the corner.

42 min: Lindelof leaps high to head clear a Seamus Coleman delivery from the right aimed at Dominic Calvert- Lewin.

40 min: Telles gets in behind the Everton defence and tries to first-time a bouncing through ball across the face of the Everton goal. Jordan Pickford collects.

39 min: A Jadon Sancho cross from the byline is hacked clear by Fabian Delph.

37 min: Iwobi is fouled out by Alex Telles out by the right touchline under the nose of the referee’s assistant. No foul is given. Manchester United substitution: Paul Pogba on for Fred, who has picked up some manner of injury and hobbles off.

36 min: Richarlison takes a shot from the edge of the Man United penalty area, his effort loops up in the air off Lindelof’s heel and David De Gea contorts himself in mid-air to keep it out. Great save.

31 min: Fred is penalised for a high boot on Alex Iwobi. Another free-kick for the home side, wide on the right.

29 min: Everton free-kick, wide on the right. Gordon sends in the cross and Michael Keane heads over the bar.

28 min: Richarlison squares the ball, Iwobi lays it off to Gordon on the edge of the Manchester United penalty area and his shot takes a wicked deflection off – you’ve guessed it – poor old Harry Maguire to leave David De Gea horribly wrongfooted.

GOAL! Everton 1-0 Manchester United (Gordon 27)

Everton lead! Anthony Gordon has a shot deflected past David De Gea.

24 min: Fabian Delph dispossesses Fred with a meaty challenge and sends the ball forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin immediately loses it.

21 min: Another Manchester United attack. Bruno Fernandes gallops down the left flank but overhits his cross, failing to pick out either Ronaldo or Rashford.

19 min: Wan-Bissaka cleans out Richarlison but avoids a booking. It seems referee Jon Moss is feeling benevolent today. On the touchline, Frank Lampard is not best pleased.

18 min: Aaron Wan-Bissaka stretches to intercept an excellent through ball from Fabian Delph towards Mykolenko. The Ukrainian left-back wasn’t quite quick enough to reach the ball and square it.

Updated

17 min: A promising Everton attack, their first of the game, comes to nothing when Richarlison fails to pick out Dominic Calvert-Lewin with a pass from the inside left.

15 min: Lindelof absolutely clatters Richarlison in mid-air as the pair contested a high ball. It was hard but fair and the Manchester United central-defender almost knocked the Brazilian into the middle of next week.

14 min: Michael Keane does well to get a penalty area challenge in on Ronaldo as the Portuguese was shaping to shoot. Everton are rocking and not necessarily in a good way.

12 min: Bruno Fernandes sends a splendid cross into the Everton penalty area, Rashford gets between both central defenders to connect with his head and Pickford saves brilliantly.

Updated

11 min: Aaron Wan-Bissaka ships a boot in the face from Richarlison as the Brazilian contested a bouncing ball. He’s ok and Richarlison avoids censure.

8 min: A low Cristiano Ronaldo drive fizzes inches wide of Pickford’s right upright. He looked offside.

7 min: Just back from suspension, Michael Keane gets a ticking-off from Jon Moss for a rash challenge on Telles. Free-kick for Manchester United wide on the left. Ronaldo floats the ball to the far post, where Lindelof heads it across the face of goal. It’s only half-cleared and bounces kindly for Rashford. His shot is well saved by Jordan Pickford, who dives low to his right.

5 min: Alex Telles slides to try and get a cross from the left into the Everton penalty area but is unable to keep the ball in play. Goal kick.

4 min: A scrappy start to the game continues, with Marcus Rashford getting bundled off the ball and dispossessed by Allan.

Early team news

While Allan and Michael Keane return from suspension, midfield loanee Donny van de Beek is unable to play against his parent club. Frank Lampard must also plan without Andros Townsend, Tom Davies, Nathan Patterson and Yerry Mina, who are all sidelined with injury.

Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to return from the illness that kept him out of his side’s draw against Leicester City last weekend, but left-back Luke Shaw is out and seems likely to be replaced by Alex Telles. Edinson Cavani is still out with a calf injury and it remains to be seen if the out-of-sorts Marcus Rashford has trained well enough this week to earn himself a place in the starting line-up.

Premier League: Everton v Manchester United

Hoo boy! Following their disastrous midweek defeat to Burnley, Everton host Manchester United as they try to put some distance between themselves and the relegation trapdoor. Having lost seven of their nine league games since Frank Lampard took charge at the end of January, Everton sit just one point and one place above the relegation zone and are in desperate need of a win.

The form of their visitors has been up and down, and United have just one win from their past four games. They are also in need of all three points if they are to keep their hopes of securing a top four place on track.

Under pressure from both Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham, Manchester United have been far from convincing in recent months but will fancy their chances against a team that looks bereft of confidence and is prone to catastrophic self-harm. Kick-off at Goodison Park is at 12.30pm but stay tuned in the meantime for team news and build-up.
