Everton staff member leaves club after decade to scout for Premier League rival

Former Everton academy player John Doolan has left the club after more than a decade working for the Blues.

Doolan rose through the scouting and recruitment departments during a long career behind the scenes that also saw him coach youth teams and focus on player and team development.

He has now moved south to become part of the behind the scenes set up at Brighton and Hove Albion. Doolan’s new role on the south coast will see him focus on scouting for centre forwards.

Doolan was a boyhood Blue who developed through the youth ranks at the club but was released before making an appearance. He joined Mansfield Town, where Colin Harvey was then coaching, in 1994 and went on to have a long professional career as he clocked up more than 500 games for clubs that also included Rochdale, Blackpool and Doncaster Rovers.

Following his retirement he ended up back with Everton, where he became increasingly valued through his roles in coaching, scouting and recruitment. His departure comes just after Lee Sargeson’s move in the opposite direction. Sargeson joined as head of scouting operations after more than five years working in the scouting setup at Brighton,

Sargeson was appointed around the same time as Dan Micciche took the role of player development lead coach in what were the latest changes at Finch Farm under director of football Kevin Thelwell.

Since he joined the club 12 months ago, Thelwell has overseen the appointment of more than two dozen members of staff - including to the roles of academy director, loan pathway manager and head of sports science.
