Everton in 'advanced' talks with Idrissa Gueye as typical transfer plan continues

Everton are 'in advanced' negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain over re-signing Idrissa Gueye, according to reports.

The midfielder made 108 appearances in a Toffees shirt over the course of his three-year stint on Merseyside, before joining PSG for a fee in the region of £30million in 2019. He fulfilled his dream to play in the Champions League, and was a mainstay in the PSG side during his first two seasons at the club.

With Gueye now 32, PSG could allow him to move on and Everton are one of the teams interested in his services. According to Ekrem Konur, the Toffees are close to signing the Senegalese midfielder, who is also keen to return to the Premier League after turning down Galatasaray.

Gueye was left out of Les Parisiens' pre-season tour of Japan with the club keen for him to find a new team. PSG are desperate to cash in on the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations winner with the player having just one year left on his contract.

Should Gueye re-join Everton, he would be the club's fourth summer signing following the arrivals of James Tarkowski, Ruben Vinagre and Dwight McNeil.

However, could history be repeating itself for the Toffees? Everton have built a reputation of signing players coming towards the end of their careers on hefty wages, and while some have worked out such as Wayne Rooney, others have not and it has been to the detriment of some of the youngsters.

Where will Everton finish this season? Let us know in the comments below!

The Toffees have decided to sign the likes of Cenk Tosun, Fabian Delph, James Rodriguez, Andros Townsend and Salomon Rondon in recent years, and they have failed to live up to the hype around them. They have often tried to sign ready-made players with experience in the game, rather than up-and-coming young talents.

Although Dele Alli is only 25, his career has dwindled from the heights it hit back in 2017, and he has not been the same player since. At the time, it was a signing that made sense given Frank Lampard's relationship with the player, however it has not worked out so far.

Anwar El-Ghazi, another player who has experience in the Premier League, joined the club on loan from Aston Villa in January but underwhelmed and failed to score a goal during his time at the Toffees. Meanwhile, Donny van de Beek made the switch from Manchester United but also failed to impress, making just seven appearances.

Having lost Richarlison to Tottenham Hotspur in a £60m switch, Everton could be in deep trouble this season if they do not act quickly and smartly in the transfer market. The Brazilian was their top scorer with 11 goals last season, and with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling for form, they will need him to get up to speed as soon as possible.
