Everton have decided to recall Cardiff City loanee Niels Nkounkou and loan him back out to French side St Etienne.
A move to Ligue 2 has looked a real possibility for the last few days now, with Nkounkou seemingly falling out of favour at the Cardiff City Stadium in recent weeks.
Reports in France earlier this week claimed talks over another loan away from Goodison Park were at an advanced stage, and a deal loaning him back out has now been confirmed by the Toffees.
The 22-year-old made 18 appearances in the Championship for the Bluebirds this season, and picked up an assist during the 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic.
However, he has fallen down the pecking order in the capital, having made just one start since the World Cup break. He has also been left out of the last two Championship matchday squads.
In a short statement confirming the news, Cardiff said: "We'd like to thank Niels for his efforts, and wish him well for the future."
Meanwhile, Cardiff are still hopeful of incomings this month after seeing recently seeing their transfer embargo lifted by the EFL and FIFA.
"It's a relief, gives people a lift," said boss Mark Hudson.
"We can look forward to what we can look at target-wise and see if we can strengthen.
"We have got targets. I'm not going to talk about players at clubs as I don't think it's fair on them.
"If there is availability and it strengthens us and brings good characters into the building, then we'll try to explore that."
