Jordan Pickford 6
Couldn’t do anything about Youri Tielemans’ wonder strike but twice saved well from Patson Daka in the first half, even though a couple of miscued clearances shredded home fans’ nerves.
Seamus Coleman 6
Up against it with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s twinkling toes running at him, he rode the storm of a difficult start to put in a solid display before making way for the more youthful Patterson as Everton chased the game.
Vitalii Mykolenko 6
Made a timely interception to clear a loose ball after Pickford saved from Daka and with Everton’s wingers struggling to get in crosses, was called upon to try and provide ammunition from out wide as he pushed forward.

Conor Coady 5
Was unfortunate that his shanked clearance culminated in Tielemans scoring from distance but it was the second time that he’d done that on a night when several Everton players seemed to struggle with their footing.
James Tarkowski 6
Came close to a first Everton goal with a powerful header that Danny Ward turned around the post, he uncharacteristically played his team into trouble when a sloppy pass was intercepted by Dewsbury-Hall.
Idrissa Gueye 7
His harrying of Boubakary Soumare and subsequent dispossession teed up the move for Alex Iwobi’s big chance early on and despite picking up a worrying knock, he continued to break things up in front of defence before making way at the interval.
Amadou Onana 6
Had a chance for his first Everton goal when heading over the bar late in the first half and while deployed in a more-advanced role than usual, things didn’t quite come off for him.
Alex Iwobi 6
Should have put Everton in front early on when he dragged a shot wide after being teed-up by Calvert-Lewin, he was energetic and enterprising on a night when his side otherwise lacked inspiration.
Dwight McNeil 5
Brought in for Gordon, he did not take his opportunity as despite a hard-working display, he was unable to provide the supply line from the flanks that you would expect from him.
Demarai Gray 5
Barracked throughout in merciless fashion by the visiting fans of the team he used to play for, you could see he was determined to silence his critics but again his often exciting build-up play was let down by wayward finishing.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin 6
A hard-working focal point for the attack, he teed up Alex Iwobi for his early chance but top centre-forwards should really be taking the one-on-one chance he had against Danny Ward after the break and he worryingly seemed to pick up a knock just before going off.
James Garner (on 46 for Gueye) 6
Provided a different dynamic to Everton’s midfield in the second half but while there were some silky touches, the end product was lacking.
Neal Maupay (on 61 for Calvert-Lewin) 6
Tried to make a nuisance of himself in the final half hour.
Abdoulaye Doucoure (on 61 for Onana) 6
Some determined runs without reward.
Anthony Gordon (on 70 for McNeil)
Little impact.
Nathan Patterson (on 70 for Coleman)
No way through.
