Everton new stadium contractors 'remain committed' to Bramley-Moore Dock following USM decision

Everton's Bramley-Moore Dock stadium contractors Laing O'Rourke have confirmed they "remain committed" to the project following news regarding Alisher Usmanov this week.

The Uzbekistan-born billionaire has been faced with multiple sanctions over the course of recent days, including from the UK and European Union, with regard to his close ties with Vladimir Putin.

Following Russia's military invasion of Ukraine, Everton took the decision to suspend their agreements with all of USM, Megafon and Yota earlier this week.

Some questioned whether this would affect the club's construction of a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, which has been making exciting progress.

In January 2020, USM secured a deal which essentially game them first refusal on the new ground's naming rights with a one-off payment of £30m.

It's believed that Everton's decision earlier this week has not affected the plans around their stadium, with funding on the £500m set to come from private investors and the club's majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri.

And the contractors involved in the build have confirmed they are still fully committed to their role.

In a statement released to The Telegraph a spokesperson for Laing O’Rourke said: “We are deeply saddened by events in Ukraine and are doing all we can to support our Ukrainian colleagues.

"We note that Everton has suspended its commercial sponsorship arrangements with three Russian companies, and can confirm that we remain committed to the contract we have signed with Everton Football Club to deliver its new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.”

Work on the docks is progressing at a steady pace as the Blues continue their plans to be in their new ground for the 2024/25 campaign.

Elements of the concrete super-structure are currently being laid, with the rest of this year set to bring work which will help the new ground finally rise above the dock walls.
