Everton goalkeeper Emily Ramsey nominated for WSL Player of the Month award

Everton goalkeeper Emily Ramsey has been nominated for the WSL’s December Player of the Month award following her impressive exploits between the sticks in a narrow defeat to Arsenal and a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

A rising and exciting star in the England set-up, Ramsey, on loan from Manchester United, has had to bide her time in Brian Sorensen’s ranks as she competes with 27-year-old Courtney Brosnan for the No.1 shirt.

And with a critical second-half of the season less than two weeks away, Ramsey’s December CV surely cuts a convincing argument for Sorensen to lean on the 22-year-old for his goalkeeping needs.

That it required the WSL’s all-time leading goalscorer to unfasten a gritty deadlock between Everton and Arsenal in December is more telling of the feats accomplished between the sticks than the lack of edge outside it. So when Ramsey pulled off an impressive double save to deny Miedema’s attempt at doubling Arsenal’s lead, the shock level was only so high.

The 22-year-old England international followed up the display with a well-deserved clean sheet in a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, her fourth league clean sheet this season.

In total, Ramsey registered 16 saves across the two fixtures to make it two league clean sheets for the youngster this season, and her exploits have deservedly seen the England under-23s player nominated for the WSL’s December Player of the Month award.

It is a significant milestone for Ramsey. After her time last season with Birmingham City, where she earned her first minutes in the WSL, going on to make 17 appearances in a tough season that ultimately ended in relegation, Ramsey was keen to glean more competitive game time at the highest level and develop her game.

Ramsey is nominated for the December award alongside Manchester United’s Ona Batlle and Leah Galton, Vivianne Miedema of Arsenal, Guro Reiten and Fran Kirby of Chelsea and Laura Coombs of Manchester City, with the winner to be announced in due course.

Everton return to WSL action when they host Reading on 15 January.
