Everton footballer arrested on suspicion of child sex offences has bail extended

An Everton footballer arrested on suspicion of child sex offences has had his bail extended.

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, will next answer bail in July. He was initially arrested in July of last year and was suspended by the club.

At the time, Everton said in a statement: "Everton can confirm it has suspended a player pending a police investigation. The club will continue to support the authorities with their inquiries and will not be making any further statement at this time."

In an update released as the player was due to answer bail today, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said a man arrested on July 16, 2021 on suspicion of child sex offences has had his bail extended.

This came after the force made an application for the extension, which was approved by magistrates. The spokesperson added: "He will now be asked to answer bail on Saturday, July 16 as enquiries continue."
