Everton excuses have gone but 'elephant in the room' remains for Frank Lampard's side

The Leicester City defeat has made Bournemouth game on Saturday a huge one and there are teams who have struggled this season and moved managers on now above us. We’re under-performing and it’s still not good enough.

It’s a must-win for me. In the end we were content with a point at Fulham but before the match we felt we could win it. I’ll be demanding three points, I’d rather go for it and three points would look a lot better for us mentally going into that World Cup break.

We struggled to sleep last season and we don’t want all that ever again. Around this time of the year we weren’t really concerned about going down as we had games to come and players to come back and fought ‘we’re going to be ok’ but in the end we only were by the skin of our teeth.

I used to like playing back-to-back fixtures against the same opponents. It was a big opportunity to add more to your game because you knew how the other team played.

It was fresh in your mind and you knew the strengths and weaknesses of your opposing player so the next time he came along, you could add a bit more to your game. You need to be a sponge during that first game tonight whether you’re playing or watching from the bench and think whether there are certain movements they make or they don’t and whether you can exploit that.

The players who get an opportunity against Bournemouth in these next couple of games need to take it because it could be their last chance. Whether we’ll do stuff in January, who knows because I think it’s going to be a very strange transfer window for everybody coming just after the World Cup.

Everton are crying out for stability and the last thing we need is another managerial change because Frank deserves a few transfer windows to turn things around but defeats here and there and questions will be asked. I know it’s a slightly different situation as he’s been there for a longer amount of time but look at the difference Brendan Rodgers has made in recent weeks, he’d have been out of the door if they hadn’t turned around the results and now they’ve found their mojo.

Going forward, the elephant in the room is whether we’ve got that quality. Three wins from 14 matches is not good enough and we expect a lot more from both Frank Lampard and this playing squad.

We’ve had our excuses but there was a full-strength team against Leicester City but still couldn’t get a result. The first five games when we played without a striker is on the board and not Frank’s head but those excuses have gone now and we need to start picking up points.

Frank has got his football philosophy but we just want to get points on the board, even if they’re scruffy points. We don’t want to have to go through a repeat of last season again but we won 11 games in 2021/22 so we’ve still got to win another eight games this term to match even that as that’s what it’s going to take to stay in this league and Frank needs to find a way of making this team more creative.
