Everton boss Brian Sorensen lifts lid on January transfer plan ahead of decisive Women's Super League clash

Brian Sorensen has revealed Everton are unlikely to do a lot of business in the January transfer window with the Danish manager confident his squad is heading in the "right direction".

It was a turbulent summer for the Blues, with nine players - including former captain Danielle Turner - leaving the club after a disappointing end to the season saw Everton finish tenth in the Women's Super League. Sorensen was brought in to replace caretaker manager Chris Roberts and made 10 new signings ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The Toffees currently sit eighth in the WSL table, with three wins from their first eight games. While Everton are without a league win since October, Sorensen has been pleased with his side's performances and is content with the squad he has at his disposal.

“I don’t think we’re going to do a lot in this January window," he said, "we’re happy with the squad we have at the moment. If something happens that is out of our control, we will react on that and see where we are but in terms of bringing a lot in, it’s not the case.

"We can talk about one (player) or something like that but not ten players like we did in summer. We’re definitely not doing that again. We are in the right direction with our squad and we’ll see.

"If anything comes for us we’ll look at it and if anybody is coming to ask about our players then we’ll also look at it but (we're) happy as it is at the moment and hopefully a slow and easy transfer window.”

Everton will have the opportunity to move into the top half of the table on Wednesday night as they take on seventh-placed Tottenham in their final WSL clash of the year. The two sides will face off at Brisbane Road more than a month after the original fixture was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Spurs made a bright start to the campaign with three wins from their first five games, however Rehanne Skinner's side have struggled for form of late and will go into Wednesday's clash looking to avoid a fourth consecutive defeat.

Looking ahead to the midweek contest, the Everton boss said: “(It) will be difficult there. They’re also coming off the back of some good performances and some maybe not so good in their perspective so they’ll want to see if they can bite back also and have a good game against us.

"We need to be ready and prepared and if we win that game we are in the table where we want to be and can go on Christmas break with confidence."

Everton have also struggled to get points on the board in recent weeks, with back-to-back defeats to Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal. Reflecting on his side's recent form, Sorensen said: "We had three really tough opponents, three out of the top four and I’m happy with two of the games - City and Arsenal - I think we did good, made a good performance.

"The United game we were not so happy with but we know that when you’re meeting those teams its probably not always three points or one point you can get so it’s more about looking at the performance and how we look. I think we’re taking a step in the right direction.

"I think if you compare us to some of the other teams in the league when we play top four I think we’re getting there. We’re getting closer.”
