On Sept. 1, 2026, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-La.) swore Rep. Everton Blair Jr. (D-Ga.) into the U.S. House of Representatives, filling the vacancy in Georgia's 13th Congressional District.
The vacancy began on April 22, 2026, after the death of Rep. David Scott (D-Ga.). In a runoff election on Aug. 25, 2026, Blair defeated Marcye Scott (D) 53.2% to 46.8%. Blair and Scott advanced to the runoff after no candidate received an outright majority in the special election on July 28, 2026. In that election — which included five candidates from all parties — Scott received 46.8% of the vote, and Blair received 36.7%.
As of Sept. 1, 2026, Republicans have a 218 to 213 majority in the U.S. House, with three vacancies. Additionally, Rep. Kevin Kiley (I-Calif.) is an independent who caucuses with Republicans.
