Everton and Liverpool matches not believed to be under threat after Brighton vs Palace postponement

Everton and Liverpool matches taking place on September 18 are not expected to be under threat following the postponement of Brighton’s home game against Crystal Palace, the ECHO understands.

The Premier League confirmed earlier today that Brighton had asked for their game at the AMEX on Saturday, September 17, to be postponed. And the request has been granted due to ‘exceptional circumstances’.

Rail workers are set to strike on Thursday, September 15 and Saturday, September 17 in action that is expected to cause nationwide disruption for fans travelling to football matches home and away.

On the Brighton vs Palace decision, a statement from the Premier League read: “The decision follows exceptional circumstances relating to the planned industrial action on the rail network, with authorities unable to sanction the fixture to be played with no public transport available for supporters.

“The Premier League has consulted with both clubs, police, the Safety Advisory Group for Brighton & Hove City Council and other relevant authorities in exploring alternative plans but all have agreed there was no other option but to postpone the fixture.”

But the ECHO understands that neither Liverpool nor Everton are currently under threat of postponement that weekend. The Toffees host West Ham at 2pm on the Sunday, with Jurgen Klopp’s side travelling to London on the same day to take on Chelsea at 4.30pm.

While neither fixture is expected to be postponed, fans travelling to and from the capital are expected to face massive disruption following two days of industrial action and the fallout that may follow.

Information posted on the National Rail site says: "Please only travel by train if your journey is absolutely necessary on these dates [15th and 17th]. Please check your last trains carefully on the days before each strike date and note also that some services are likely to be disrupted or start later than normal on the morning after each strike."
