The container ship the Ever Forward has run aground in the US, following in the footsteps of its sister vessel the Even Given after it infamously got stuck in the Suez Canal for six days last year.
The Ever Forward became stuck in Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, after leaving a Baltimore port on Sunday night en route to Norfolk in Virginia.
The 1,096-foot ship was travelling through the Craighill Channel, which is about 15-metres deep.
A US Coast Guard spokesman said the ship travelled outside the channel into shallower water which was only 7.5-metres deep.
An investigation into how it ran aground has been launched.
There have been no injuries to crew or damage caused to the Ever Forward.
The Maryland Port Administration said it is not currently affecting transit through the US port.
Nearby ships have been asked to reduce their speeds and travel in one-way traffic as they pass the vessel.
The Ever Given got wedged in Egypt’s Suez Canal in March last year, blocking one of the world’s busiest trade routes.
The giant container ship is 400-metres long, or the length of four football pitches.
