Even Leeds United supporters applaud West Brom over Carlos Corberan Happy Valley contract tease

Leeds United fans saw their hopes a potential reunion with former Whites assistant coach Carlos Corberan dashed on Tuesday night, when West Bromwich Albion confirmed that the Spaniard has signed a contract extension at The Hawthorns.

Corberan had been the bookmakers' early favourite to replace Jesse Marsch, whose time at Elland Road ended on Monday afternoon following Sunday's 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest.

The American departs with Leeds sitting 17th in the Premier League table and only out of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Corberan's links with the club and his growing reputation in the dugout saw him linked with the Elland Road vacancy, with plenty of fans keen to see one of Marcelo Bielsa's acolytes given the job. But the 39-year-old has now put pen to paper on a contract extension that sees him commit his future at The Hawthorns until 2027, striking him off Leeds' list of potential options in the process.

This will have disappointed a number of Leeds United supporters, but even they could admit that West Brom's tease of the new deal on social media was a stroke of genius.

Tapping into the current zeitgeist the Baggies social media team turned to the acclaimed BBC series Happy Valley to help announce the news of Corberan's new deal.

They plucked an instant classic scene from the third and final series of the West Yorkshire-set drama that saw Sarah Lancashire's Catherine Cawood confront her sister Clare (played by Siobhan Finneran) in a cafe, tweeting out a key line of dialogue.

"Why's everybody pretending you're going to Leeds, when you're not?," asks Lancashire in a line that perfectly fit the narrative around Corberan amid Baggies' fans growing fears at losing their head coach.

There was little that disappointed Leeds fans could do, other their hold up their hands and praise the Championship side's social media team...

Leeds supporters will now be hoping that their own social media team will be cooking up something special for an announcement of their own.
