Eury Perez, the Miami Marlins’ 20-year-old wunderkind of a 6-8 right-handed pitcher, continues to find ways to amaze through the early start of his MLB career.
He hit another milestone in the Marlins’ 4-1 win over the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday at T-Mobile Park, a win that allowed Miami (38-31) to avoid a series sweep.
Perez, the No. 6 overall prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, threw six shutout innings on Wednesday, holding Seattle (33-34) to just two hits and one walk while striking out six.
It was the first time in seven MLB starts that Perez pitched beyond the fifth inning.
After Wednesday’s stellar outing, Perez has held opponents to just one run over 21 innings through his past four starts. That’s a 0.43 ERA in that span to lower his overall ERA to 1.80 through his first seven MLB starts. The game-by-game breakdown of those four outings:
▪ May 28 at the Los Angeles Angels: Two hits and four walks allowed over five shutout innings with three strikeouts.
▪ June 3 against the Oakland Athletics: Four hits and one walk over five shutout innings with five strikeouts.
▪ Friday at the Chicago White Sox: Five hits and two walks allowed over five innings with six strikeouts. He allowed one run, a solo home run by Yasmani Grandal.
▪ And then Wednesday against the Mariners, when he worked around a leadoff walk to JP Crawford in the first and doubles to Teoscar Hernandez in the fourth Cal Raleigh in the fifth.
Jonathan Davis opened scoring in the third when he got home on a wild pitch. Jorge Soler added his 20th home run of the season in the sixth to give Miami an insurance run and the Marlins tacked on two more in the eighth on a Nick Fortes RBI double and Davis sacrifice fly.
Dylan Floro and Tanner Scott pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, respectively. A.J. Puk held Seattle to one run in the ninth, with Jesus Sanchez robbing a potential game-tying grand slam by Eugenio Suarez that ended up as a sacrifice fly.
Luis Arraez batting average update
For the first time this season, Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez has been held without a hit in three consecutive games. He went 0 for 3 on Wednesday with a walk and a hit by pitch. He has not had a hit in his last 15 plate appearances.
His batting average, which was as high as .403 on June 7, is now down to .378, which still leads MLB.
