Eurovision 2023 viewers divided over Mae Muller news as UK entry to perform last

Eurovision Song Contest 2023 viewers were a little worried after realising the UK entry Mae Muller may have a fight on her hands, if she wants to win during the live final.

Mae is set to perform her catchy track I Wrote A Song, with many Eurovision fans tipping her to be as successful as our 2022 entry.

TikTok star Sam Ryder bagged second place with his song SPACE MAN last year, and now there's high hopes for this year's UK entry too.

But after the release of the running order and the show getting underway, some viewers spotted something that could make things harder for Mae.

Many viewers tuning in suggested her performance placement could work against her, and could be a huge clue that sadly she may not win.

The star appeared briefly on stage at the start of the show, before having to wait for all of the other acts to perform before her chance.

Mae is the final act of the night to perform, and is act number 26 - but fans were divided on whether this was an advantage or not.

While some fans questioned if this would help Mae, as she'd be the last song viewers will hear before the vote, others remembered past finals and feared this placement would put a stop to her hopes of winning.

Taking to Twitter, one viewer said: "It's nice knowing that the UK is performing last tomorrow night but also it really didn't go well for us last time we performed last."

Another said: "26th not the best place to be, most people already have a favourite song by then."

A third viewer commented: "Mae muller on last," with a worried face emoji, while a fourth said: "singing last, cannot be good."

However, some fans disagreed with this view as one said: "It seems we’ll be the last act performing in the #Eurovision Song Contest this year - this probably benefits us, as unfortunately songs at the start can risk being a little forgotten by the time the voting begins. So it might help us a little!"

A second wrote: "UK last! Could be great for us." Another excited fan said: "might be an advantage."

Ukraine won Eurovision last year, meaning the nation faced the prospect of hosting the show in 2023, according to the rules of the competition.

However, due to the Russian invasion, it wasn't possible, as Eurovision organisers quickly ruled out staging it in the war-torn country.

The BBC agreed to host the competition in the UK in 2023 after Sam finished in second place – and Liverpool was picked as the host city to hold the star-studded event.

In terms of the UK automatically qualifying for Eurovision, as part of the contest’s guidelines, there are a selection of "big five" countries which automatically qualify for the grand final.

The big five countries are those who make the biggest financial contribution to the competition.

A statement on Eurovision website reads: "The Big Five are the Participating Broadcasters from France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom – the group of countries who via their broadcasters make the biggest financial contribution towards the organisation of the contest."

In 2023, the UK government pledged £10million for the competition.

The Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
