European holiday destination to scrap Covid rules for UK travellers next week

Another European holiday destination popular with British holidaymakers is set to scrap Covid restrictions next week. Malta has confirmed that it will soon be easier for UK tourists to visit the country.

Currently, Brits hoping to enter Malta need to show either evidence of full Covid-19 vaccination or a negative Covid test in order to gain access to the country. However, this will be scrapped from Monday, July 25, ahead of the summer holidays, The Sun reports.

Visit Malta issued a statement confirming the news: "As from July 25, 2022, people travelling to Malta without a vaccine certificate or a recovery certificate do not need to present a negative PCR/Rapid Test before arriving in Malta."

Malta is the latest European holiday hotspot to lift the restrictions imposed to limit the spread of coronavirus. In May, Greece removed all Covid-related entry requirements, as did Cyprus.

Egypt also scrapped Covid travel restrictions for tourists visiting the country last month, with Portugal also now free of the limitations. Tourists have been warned, however, that some destinations could reintroduce some rules as the number of coronavirus cases climbs once more.

Popular Spanish destinations including the Canary Islands and Costa del Sol haven't ruled out the return of wearing face coverings while indoors.

It comes as Jet2 prepares for its busiest-ever weekend with almost 150,000 holidaymakers travelling to and from destinations across the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. The airline will run more than 800 flights - including over 425 flights tomorrow (July 23) alone - including some from Newcastle International Airport.
