European Athletics Championships: Charlie Dobson earns Britain silver as Molly Caudery takes pole vault bronze

Charlie Dobson took silver in the 400m at the European Athletics Championships, before Molly Caudery earned pole vault bronze for Great Britain.

After Dina Asher-Smith won gold on Sunday night, there was briefly hope of another victory for the British camp to celebrate in Rome, as Dobson moved alongside Belgium's Alexander Doom in the men’s 400m final.

Doom proved too strong though in the final metres, taking gold with a new championship record of 44.15, but a personal best from Dobson ensured he earned his place on the podium.

“I’m over the moon, I couldn’t be happier with that,” Dobson said.

“I think I executed the race perfectly, exactly how me and my coach wanted to. Unfortunately it wasn’t the gold but I’m more than happy to take the silver, especially with a PB like that.”

Caudery, the reigning World Indoor champion, was guaranteed a medal after she cleared 1.68m at the second attempt, as Italy's Elisa Molinarolo was knocked out to leave just three athletes in the hunt.

Caudery then went over at 4.73m but, after one failure at 4.78m, was twice unable to clear 4.83m, leaving her with bronze behind Switzerland's Angelica Moser and Greece's Aikaterini Stefanidi. It is Great Britain’s ninth medal of the championships.

Daryll Neita booked her place in the 200m final with a brilliant showing, qualifying fastest from the semi-finals with a time of 22.51s.

"I’m feeling confident about tomorrow's final,” the 27-year-old said.

“It would mean so much to me. I came here two years ago, competed in the 100m and got the bronze and I really felt like I was capable of doing better. This time I really want to execute and do what I know I can do."
