The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has made strong accusations against Israel, claiming that the country is using starvation as a weapon of war in Gaza. Borrell stated that Gaza is currently in a state of famine, directly caused by Israel's actions of preventing humanitarian support from entering the region.
During the European Humanitarian Forum in Brussels, Borrell highlighted that hundreds of trucks carrying aid were being held at the border, leading to dire consequences for the people in Gaza. He emphasized that the situation was critical, with lives at stake due to the lack of access to essential supplies.
While Borrell blamed Israel for obstructing the delivery of aid, Israeli officials have refuted these claims. Col. Elad Goren of Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) explained that the challenge lies in effectively distributing aid across Gaza, rather than in blocking access to the region.
Following Borrell's remarks, the UN aid chief, Martin Griffith, also criticized the restrictions imposed on humanitarian organizations operating in Gaza. Griffith expressed frustration over the obstacles faced by the UN in carrying out its relief efforts, citing issues of limited access and distribution challenges.
The ongoing dispute over aid delivery to Gaza underscores the complex humanitarian situation in the region, with differing perspectives on the root causes of the crisis. As international organizations continue to navigate these challenges, the focus remains on finding solutions to ensure that vital assistance reaches those in need in Gaza.
