Right off the release of Ethel Cain’s (real name: Hayden Silas Anhedönia) long-awaited second album, Perverts, the American singer-songwriter has taken to Instagram to express her support for the idea of violence against CEOs in order to enact genuine change.
Reposting a graphic made by former US Secretary of Labour Robert Reich, Ethel writes: “#KillMoreCEOs,” before continuing on in two more accompanying slides.

“Not even trying to be reactionary or ‘edgy’ or say this shit for shock value, I genuinely mean what i say.”
“Nobody is getting visited by the ghost of Christmas future, no one is having a change of heart. It’s simple, you make them fear for their lives and hit them in the only place they hurt or nothing will ever get done.”
“‘Violence is never the answer’ Wrong. Sometimes it is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯”
“The world is burning and it’s very clear who’s holding the matches,” she writes in another Story.

Ethel Cain has made similar statements regarding her thoughts on CEOs before, most notably following the killing of Healthcare United CEO, Brian Thompson, spurring a wide conversation around healthcare reform in the US.
Last month, the songwriter called for the release of Luigi Mangione, the prime suspect in Thompson’s death, and stated that “violence begets violence” in an Instagram Story.

Reactions to Ethel’s recent comments show that a lot of folk share very similar sentiments, with one X (formerly Twitter) user writing: “She is so right. No one cares who dies as long as profits are made. There are no laws for the rich.”
“She speaks for all of us. Eat the rich,” writes another.
On Reddit, the comments also happen to share Ethel’s views: “If you don’t give people an avenue but violence to have their voices heard, radicalization is inevitable. It’s not a surprise we keep seeing an uptick of mass violence.”
“I agree with Ethel on the violence sometimes being the answer. At the end of the day, if violence wasn’t the answer, why is the US always in wars or funding wars (many of which aren’t even technically ours)? Fear causes people to act. Politicians have been using this strategy for over centuries,” says another user.
Whew – there you have it.
While the rest of the world waits for the beginning of Mangione’s upcoming trial later next month, at least we can all tide ourselves over by tuning into the spooky gothic sounds lovingly gifted to us by Mother Cain.
