Esther Brown to be remembered a year on from tragic murder with touching memorial stone

A much-loved Glasgow woman is to be remembered a year on from her tragic death.

Esther Brown was raped and murdered at her home in Woodlands in May, 2021, leaving the local community shocked and bereft.

The 67-year-old was a founding member of the Woodlands Community Garden and was on the board of trustees of the Woodlands Community Trust where she also helped run the community cafe.

It was Esther's concerned friends who contacted the police after she failed to attend her usual church service, community hall, and pre-arranged walk in a park.

They described the retired librarian as a 'walking angel' who was 'an exceptionally kind, compassionate and caring individual who dedicated her life to helping others'.

The group will be holding an event to remember Esther in Woodlands Community Garden where a carved memorial stone will be unveiled in her memory.

The stone, which has been carved to form a birdbath to reflect Esther's love of nature, will be the centerpiece of a newly created rockery and wildlife area in the garden.

The event will be held at 2pm on Esther's birthday weekend - June 12 - and will include the chance to share memories of her.

Woodlands Community Trust said: "Esther Brown was a founding member of our community garden and her generous spirit was central to making the community garden a welcoming and inclusive place.

"For many years she also helped to run our community café and served on our board of charity trustees. Esther was an exceptionally kind, compassionate and caring individual who dedicated her life to helping others. Through her voluntary work she touched the lives and hearts of countless people. We miss her terribly.

"Esther was murdered at the end of May 2021. We have timed this event to coincide with her birthday weekend, and focus on the positives of her life, rather than the terrible circumstances of her death."

Registered sex offender Jason Graham was found guilty of the brutal rape and murder of Esther in what the judge described as “the gravest of crimes".

Jailing Graham for a minimum of 19 years at the High Court in Livingston, Lord Armstrong told him the vicious murder had had a “devastating and continuing impact” on the lives of her relatives and members of her community.
