Even though Ohio State moved to 5–0 on the season with a 37–17 victory over Big Ten opponent Maryland on Saturday, ESPN host Matt Barrie was critical of Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day.
Barrie’s judgment of Day came specifically in regard to the end of the game, when Ohio State decided to kick a meaningless field goal with just over two minutes to play.
“Ryan Day ought to be ashamed of himself,” Barrie said on Sunday’s episode of The Matt Barrie Show. “They were up 17 late, kicked a meaningless field goal to go up 20. That spread was 19 1/2. For those of us that were on Maryland plus the points, that was a real backbreaker.”
It sounds as if Barrie had a personal stake in the game, which may have inspired his disapproval of Day’s field goal decision.
As Barrie mentions, Maryland took a 10–0 lead to begin Saturday’s game, but Ohio State rallied in the second half with 27 unanswered points.
