Valdez was struck on his left hand/wrist area by a pitch, immediately exited the game in visible discomfort, and underwent imaging after the club feared he may have sustained a significant injury, including a possible fracture. Fortunately, X-rays did not reveal any broken bones, and the Pirates later listed him as day-to-day, turning what initially appeared to be a potentially serious injury into an injury scare.
The incident raised immediate concern because direct blows from pitched baseballs can cause fractures and other injuries to the hand or wrist that often require lengthy recoveries. However, follow-up medical evaluations ruled out a fracture, allowing Valdez to avoid an extended absence and providing a significant boost for Pittsburgh.
