Escape to the Country's Jonnie Irwin posts upbeat update as spends day with friends

Much-loved TV presenter Jonnie Irwin posted an upbeat update - as England’s cricketers gave him and the rest of the country a much-needed boost. The Escape to the Country star who is suffering from terminal cancer gave his followers a boost as he grinned while sitting on a patio with two friends.

And Jonnie posted that he was looking forward to watching Today at the Test on the BBC after the men’s team narrowly squeaked home to beat Australia at Headingley by three wickets. The win, which looked in doubt after Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow fell in quick succession means the England team is firmly back in the series at 2:1 in terms of wins with two tests still to play.

Jonnie posted in his Instagram story and said ‘catching the end of the ashes’ and added ‘can’t wait to watch today at the ashes later!’. The trio were sitting with drinks in the sun and his fans will have been delighted to see Jonnie relaxing and having fun.

The dad-of-three, originally from Leicestershire has been forced to have hospice care to help him cope with pain from his cancer which has spread from his lungs to his brain. Earlier this year Jonnie held his 50th birthday party early with more than 100 friends and family.

Fans have been closely following Jonnie’s posting to check how he is doing. At an awards ceremony last month, Jonnie said: “I take every day as a gift and as it comes.” Speaking about being on Escape to the Country on the BBC he said his fellow presenters were like a “family” to him and supported him throughout his journey.

He also applauded the production staff saying: “They were understanding especially with travel arrangements. They were so supportive I can’t thank them enough.” He added as he referred to the show’s TRIC nomination: “They are family. It’s recognition for all the work that production, post-production and crew all put in.

“I’ve worked on Escape for coming up to ten years, but 20 years in the industry and I’ve had the most fun and its the most like a family of all the shows I’ve done.”
