Escape To The Country's Jonnie Irwin 'horrified' by ear treatment in latest health update

Jonnie Irwin has told of his 'surprise and horror' at trying out a particular treatment in a new health update to his followers online. Taking to Instagram, the Escape To The Country and A Place In The Sun star revealed he tried Hopi ear candles for the first time following suggestions from his wife, Jessica.

He shared a picture of himself with a shocked expression on his face as he can be seen lying on his side while holding a lit candle to his ear. The 49-year-old wrote: "Wasn’t sure about letting my wife stick Hopi ear candles in my lug holes but surprised/horrified with the results. I’ll spare you the ‘after’ photos!"

Many people rushed to comment on the dad-of-three's picture, with several praising Jonnie, who is currently battleing terminal lung cancer, for his sense of humour.

Butterpatblues replied: "I Hopi it worked for you, Jonnie. But even if it didn't the look on your face has made my day!! Thank you!!" Victor.stellah said: "Love me a bit of hopi treatment. The end result is disgusting yet ridiculously satisfying."

Chillkat79 joked: "Intriguing …are you sure your wife didn’t just want 10 minutes of peace. Hope it worked for you jonnie." Emzblack05 put: "Haway man we love all the grunge! They are great aren't they, now you'll really hear the kids!"

Hopi ear candles are used to treat a number of conditions of the ear, nose and throat and some people use them to remove earwax. According to the Express, they are not conventional candles, but rather a cotton tube, infused with beeswax, honey and therapeutic oils.

Last year, the TV star announced that he has been told by doctors he only has months left to live as the cancer has spread to his brain. Speaking to Hello! Magazine at the time, the property expert said he first noticed symptoms back in 2020 when his vision wen blurry.

He said: "Within a week of flying back from filming, I was being given six months to live. I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much. That was devastating. All I could do was apologise to her. I felt so responsible."

Jonnie and his family initially decided to keep his diagnosis private, but speaking to the magazine, he said he hopes sharing his story will help “inspire people to make the most of everyday.”
