Erling Haaland was just as gobsmacked as every other Manchester City supporter by Kevin De Bruyne’s wondergoal against Leicester City. Pep Guardiola had to clinch the victory without his 22-goal talisman as he picked up a knock in midweek.
The Norwegian was substituted at half-time of the goalless draw against Borussia Dortmund and watched the 1-0 triumph over Leicester City from home. In his absence, Julian Alvarez was given the nod up front but City lacked their usual killer instinct as they had to do without prolific striker Haaland, who has netted 17 league goals this season.
It took a moment of genius from De Bruyne to secure the win and move his side one point clear at the top of the Premier League. On 49 minutes, the Belgian curled home a 25-yard free-kick to break the stubborn Foxes’ resistance and send the away end into raptures.

The goal-of-the-month contender, which came after Jack Grealish was felled by Nampalys Mendy 25 yards out, was De Bruyne’s 25th goal from outside the box since signing for City in 2015. City fans were not the only ones left amazed by the free-kick, which went in off the post, as Haaland quickly took to social media and tweeted his astonishment at his teammate’s latest moment of genius.
The City forward tagged De Bruyne in a tweet, alongside the heart eyes emoji. City fans are clearly desperate to see their talisman returning judging by the responses on Haaland's timeline.
