Erik ten Hag urged to sell injury-plagued Antony Martial in damning Man Utd assessment

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has urged Erik ten Hag to sell Anthony Martial - and claimed the Frenchman "doesn't deserve" to play for the club again.

The 27-year-old has made just 14 appearances in all competitions this season and has missed the last seven Premier League matches through injury. Martial will also sit out Thursday night's Europa League last-16 first-leg tie against Real Betis with an ongoing hip issue.

During his time on the pitch, Martial has been effective. He has six goals and two assists to his name in 722 minutes of action - averaging a contribution less than every 100 minutes. However, ex-United right-back Parker does not see a future for Martial at Old Trafford.

"I don't think that we will ever see Martial playing for Man United again. I don't think Erik ten Hag is that concerned about it because Martial doesn't fit into his way of playing," Parker told Bettors. "Also, he doesn't deserve to play again for Man Utd. He hasn't taken his chances and he is showing no consistency at all."

Martial first made the move to Manchester in September 2015 from Monaco in a deal worth £36million, rising to £58m, on a four-year contract. This was the highest fee ever paid for a teenager and there were high expectations placed on Martial's shoulders at the time.

The ex-Lyon forward hit the ground running at the Red Devils and scored an impressive 17 goals in his debut season as United lifted the FA Cup in May 2016. However, it wasn't until the 2019/20 campaign where Martial really found his best form in a United shirt.

He struck a career-best 23 goals and made 12 assists in 48 appearances during the Covid-hit season as he showed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer what he was all about. But that is as good as it has gotten for Martial at United - and he was even shipped out on loan to Sevilla last season after falling out of favour.

"He has never enjoyed his time at Man Utd and now he has to move on," Parker added. “If you look at the way Ten Hag has been with certain players… Look at [Jesse] Lingard, look at [Paul] Pogba, look at Ronaldo, Martial is going to go. He’s not the player he once was. Erik ten Hag wants players that he hasn’t got to ask to work hard."

Martial has been ruled out of the clash against Betis but could return for United's game against Southampton in the Premier League on Sunday. Wout Weghorst has been in a regular in the Red Devils side since Martial's injury but minutes could be shared given United's hectic schedule.
