Erik ten Hag to 'accelerate' Man Utd transfer talks immediately after World Cup

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is reportedly set to accelerate his plans for upcoming transfer windows as soon as the World Cup finishes.

The Red Devils recovered from a poor start to the season to end their first six months of Ten Hag's reign on a high. But he is continuing to overhaul the squad he inherited when he took over from interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The Dutchman made six signings in the summer, with 12 players departing either permanently or on loan. Superstar attacker Cristiano Ronaldo has also since left Old Trafford, with United again set to be busy in the market.

At the top of Ten Hag's shopping list is thought to be a new right-back, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka still out of his plans. According to Sky Sport Deutschland, Ten Hag is targeting a move for Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Frimpong is on international duty with Netherlands at the World Cup, though is yet to make an appearance. It is said that even if he is not able to impress, a move to United is becoming more and more likely.

The Red Devils have been in negotiations with Leverkusen since October, with Frimpong aware of their interest in him. The 21-year-old is said to be 'open to changing' clubs and joining United.

The right-back has a contract with Leverkusen that does not expire until the summer of 2025. Despite that, it is expected that talks will be 'accelerated' once the World Cup comes to a close.

A move in January would appear to be unlikely, meaning a deal is set to be 'imminently' agreed for the summer instead. In a sign that a deal is expected to be completed, Leverkusen are already looking for replacements for the Dutchman.

Frimpong is in his third year at Leverkusen following an 18-month spell at Celtic after graduating from Manchester City's academy. The news that he is being targeted likely spells the end of any hopes Wan-Bissaka has of reclaiming his place in the team.

Diogo Dalot has been preferred at right-back by Ten Hag, with even left-back Tyrell Malacia and centre-back Victor Lindelof ahead of Wan-Bissaka in the pecking order for that position.

The Daily Telegraph reported last week that Wan-Bissaka is seen as being 'surplus to requirements' by Ten Hag. The United boss wants a fresh face to challenge Dalot for his starting spot.

Wan-Bissaka's form has tailed off badly since he made a £50million move to United from Crystal Palace three-and-a-half years ago. He has played for just four minutes this season and was linked with a cut-price exit in the summer window.

With Frimpong appearing to be a likely arrival either in January or next summer, Wan-Bissaka will be allowed to leave. United will begin searching for suitors for the Englishman, having seemingly found his replacement.
