Erik ten Hag explains why Scott McTominay starts in Casemiro's absence for Man United vs Arsenal

Erik ten Hag has faith in Scott McTominay to perform for Manchester United in the absence of Casemiro against Arsenal.

United take on Arsenal at the Emirates on Sunday afternoon but Casemiro has not travelled to London for the match, as he picked up his fifth yellow card of the Premier League season in midweek, which means he's serving a one-match suspension.

In his absence, Ten Hag has named a midfield three of Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes and, with the exception of McTominay, he made no other changes from the starting team that drew against Crystal Palace.

McTominay replacing Casemiro in the starting XI was a forced decision and Ten Hag discussed that call ahead of kick-off.

The United boss explained his team selection and said he was starting McTominay because he is the 'right solution'.

"Last time, he did very well and also we've had really good performances with Scott in the team this season," Ten Hag told MUTV. "So I'm convinced this is the right solution, Scott can do the job, he's a great player for our squad.

"He's a great player for this team and I think he's also making a good development. I had something in mind for where Fred could have played, a role like last week against City, but during the game, we can change if necessary.

"Also to bring Arsenal further away from their comfort zone, we have to adapt to the game and we can do it with Fred. We know he's there and last week, he played magnificent, he's always good from the bench and I can count on him.

"But for this game, we made the selection with Scott McTominay."

Arsenal are top of the Premier League and only Newcastle have taken a point from the Gunners at home this season.

United are currently eight points behind Arsenal and they could move to third position with a point on Sunday.
