Erik ten Hag explains why Anthony Martial is absent for Manchester United vs Crystal Palace

Erik ten Hag has confirmed Anthony Martial is absent from Manchester United's team to play Crystal Palace due to injury.

Martial, 27, returned from a two-week layoff against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday and he played 30 minutes from the substitute bench in that League Cup clash, but he's unavailable again to play Palace on Saturday afternoon with an injury concern.

The forward has missed 18 games this season through hamstring, Achilles and back injuries and he's made just six league starts.

Ten Hag has insisted that United are a better side when Martial plays, but the Frenchman has been plagued with injury problems throughout his time at Old Trafford and an update was given on him ahead of kick-off against Palace.

When asked about Martial, the United boss told MUTV: "Yeah, he had a setback from the game when he returned. He thought he could build up, but yeah, he dropped a little back, so have to wait, be patient, not to force it."

Elsewhere, Ten Hag brought Marcus Rashford and David de Gea back into the starting team and he discussed his selection:

"They [Dalot and Sabitzer] are ready to play, so they could start as well," he added. "We make a selection, I think we have a good team today with Rashy and De Gea back, quite clear, but we know what to do because we dropped points in our last two league games.

"You can't get them back, but we need to learn the lessons. We dropped them in the last minutes, so we need a better performance, more intensity and we have to keep going until the 90th minute."
