Enough fentanyl was seized in the US this year by drug cops to kill EVERY American

Enough fentanyl has been seized in the US to kill every American, federal drug agents have revealed.

More than 397 million fatal fentanyl doses have been intercepted, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) - with just two milligrams enough to be deadly.

The drug is a highly addictive substance and 50 times more lethal than heroin, with the opioid being mostly trafficked into the US from Mexico.

There has been more than 10,000lb (4,500kg) of fentanyl seized in the US including 50.6m fentanyl pills which are designed to look like different prescription painkillers such as Xanax, Percocet and OxyContin.

Drugs seized have more than doubled since 2021, with overdose deaths increasing among teenagers during the pandemic, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released earlier this year.

Deaths from opioid overdoses in teens aged 14 to 18 increased by 94 per cent between 2019 and 2020, and by a further 20 per cent between 2020 and 2021.

The Drug Enforcement Administration said the drugs were mass-produced at hideaway factories in Mexico by the Sinaloa and Jalisco drug cartels using chemicals from China.

The Sinola Cartel was run by billionaire drug barren "El Chapo" who is serving a life sentence at the Supermax prison in Colorado.

Many of his sons have since taken over the operation and continue to have the monopoly on dangerous fentanyl markets.

DEA Administrator Anne Milgram said: "DEA's top operational priority is to defeat the two Mexican drug cartels - the Sinaloa and Jalisco (CJNG) Cartels - that are primarily responsible for the fentanyl that is killing Americans today."

Over 100,000 Americans have lost their lives to drug overdoses in the past year with two-thirds down to fentanyl.

Milgram added: "Fentanyl is killing Americans at record rates. Many of them didn't realise they were taking the deadliest drug our country has ever seen."

The drug agency confirmed the amount of fentanyl seized was enough to kill all 330 million residents of the US.

Cocaine, heroin and other illicit street drugs can contain killer amounts of fentanyl, according to the agency.

They have also seized 131,000lb of methamphetamine, more than 4,300lb of heroin, and over 444,000lb of cocaine over the past year.
