Who will England play in the World Cup Round of 16? And what is their potential route to the final?

Harry Kane celebrates with teammates after scoring a penalty for his team's first goal during the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group L match between England and Croatia at Dallas Stadium on June 17, 2026 .

The knockout phase of the World Cup is underway, with some big-hitters already knocked out after Germany were beaten by Paraguay and the Netherlands lost to Morocco.

Canada, France, Brazil, Norway and Mexico have also booked their respective places in the last 16.

They were then followed by England, who progressed with a hard-fought 2-1 win over DR Congo in which they had to come from behind after conceding in just seven minutes.

Who do England play next in the World Cup 2026?

Next up for the Three Lions is a very tricky game against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, making it essentially an away match.

Mexico may not have the strongest squad, but the home support and other issues like altitude and heat are all going to make life very difficult for Thomas Tuchel's men.

After a comfortable group stage in which they won all three of their matches against South Africa, South Korea and Czechia, Mexico breezed into the knockout stages.

They then continued to impress in the Round of 32, beating Ecuador 2-0 to set up a thrilling last 16 match against England.

Quarter final - Brazil or Norway

If they get past Mexico, England's next game would be a quarter-final tie on Saturday, July 11 in Miami, with the game kicking off at 10pm UK time.

They will face the winners of Norway vs Brazil, which promises to be an enticing encounter.

Brazil have performed steadily on their way to the last 16, putting three goals apiece past the likes of Scotland and Haiti.

However, they had to come from behind and rely on a late winner to beat Japan in the Round of 32.

Meanwhile, Norway have plenty of star players, including the likes of Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard and Antonio Nusa and could easily cause an upset against Brazil.

Semi-finals: Who could England play in the semis?

Semi-finals: Argentina (probably)

England and Argentina are on paper the strongest sides in each quarter of the draw, and they have a relatively generous-looking route to the semi-finals.

Lionel Messi and co will take on Cape Verde in the round of 32, before going on to face the winners of Australia's meeting with Egypt.

The other half of that quarter-final will be either Switzerland, Algeria, Colombia or Ghana.

Final: Spain, France, Morocco or Portugal

That's one hell of a half of a draw.

Germany were stunned by Paraguay in the Round of 32, before France beat Sweden; Canada defeated South Africa, and the Netherlands lost on penalties to Morocco. Next up, Portugal play Croatia, and Spain play Austria (winner of each face one another); United States play Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Belgium will face Senegal (the winners of those two play each other).

Anything could happen in that side of the draw – but there are now four clear favourites, plus the US, who may be the most in form of anyone.
