England vs Spain prediction and odds: Back Lionesses to book their Euro 2022 semi-final place

Bookmakers rated England and Spain as the two sides most likely to go all the way to Euro 2022 glory coming into this tournament but one of these talented sides will not make it past the quarter-final stage.

It's the first big Euro 2022 test for the Lionesses, who rocketed through their group by an aggregate score of 14-0 from their three Group A matches. Any notion that the hosts will be able to dismiss the Spanish in similar fashion looks fancififul, although England are favourites to win this game (19/20 with Betfred) and progress to the semi-final.

Sarina Wiegman’s side head into this game with confidence sky high and it feels like momentum is with the hosts, who have the advantage of an extra day's rest over their opponents.

Spain are actually ranked one place above England in FIFA's international classification but their Euro 2022 prospects were dealt a huge blow when they lost Ballon d’Or winner Alexia Putellas with a devastating ACL injury on the eve of the tournament. Jorge Vilda's side were already without record goalscorer Jennifer Hermoso and the absence of their two most important players is severely affecting the cutting edge of this side despite the fact that they had 70%+ possession in each of their group games.

Spain are the last side to stop England courtesy of a 0-0 draw back in February but these sides have gone on different trajectories since and Spain's deficiences were brutally exposed by Germany in the group stages.

England's scoring record under Wiegman has been quite phenominal and the number of top-class attacking options at the coach's disposal almost guarantees that England will create big chance against anyone and no matter who plays.

England's Beth Mead scored five goals in the group stages, putting her in pole position for the Women's Euro 2022 Golden Boot award and it's the in-form Arsenal hot-shot that could once again make the breakthrough. Mead is 11/2 with Betfred to score first and an incredibly tempting 9/4 to strike any point in the 90 minutes.

England vs Spain prediction

Expect Spain to have an awful lot of possession in this game but that won't prevent the Lionesses from creating big moments and, on the evidence of this tournament so far, they look sure to take at least one.

Don't expect another route, but England look perfectly placed to capitalise on Spain's troubles and they can send the Amex Stadium wild by booking their spot in the semi-final. Keep it simple by just backing England to win in standard time at 19/20.
