England beat Scotland 16-15 in the Six Nations on Saturday evening to end their wretched recent run in the Calcutta Cup and lift the trophy for the first time since 2020. Finn Russell was left to rue three costly missed conversion attempts in a dramatic one-point contest at Twickenham, including a last-gasp kick that veered wide after Duhan van der Merwe’s score looked to have set up an unprecedented fifth successive victory over the ‘auld enemy’.
Russell also failed to convert earlier scores from Ben White and Huw Jones as Scotland dominated the first half, but only led by three points at the interval after Tommy Freeman hit back early for England, who were improved thereafter and led by six points late on after two Marcus Smith penalties and a long-range effort from namesake Fin Smith.
