Match report

Ilona Maher says: “We lost on the field but the sport won in so many other ways – setting a record crowd for a World Cup opener. But we do need to do better on the field.” Her face betrays the disappointment, but the USA star is not all down.

“This gets us psyched for Australia, because we had moments of brilliance there – I think we can beat Australia. We talk about playing to our potential. The hope is that we can unlock that potential.” She is right: the USA definitely had their moments, despite the one-sided scoreline against England.
