Phil Foden is out of England’s upcoming Nations League games against Hungary and Germany after testing positive for Covid-19.
The Manchester City star has left the England camp to recover, but could return for next Saturday’s game against Italy at Molineux.
Foden is, however, definitely sidelined for tomorrow’s match in Budapest and Tuesday’s trip to Munich.
Centre-backs Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi are also out of the game against Hungary, while Raheem Sterling is a doubt after illness.
“Fikayo and Marc Guehi both arrived with injuries, but they are progressing well,” said England boss Gareth Southgate at his Friday press conference.
“They won’t be involved in tomorrow’s game. There’s a chance for some involvement against Germany, but then they should be fine for the games from there on.
“Phil Foden, unfortunately, has tested positive for Covid, so he has had to leave. Hopefully he will be able to meet up when we get back from Germany.
“Other than that, Raheem has missed a couple of days training with a bit of an illness. So we will assess whether we involve him tomorrow, but everybody else is fully fit.”
Southgate hopes Foden could return for England’s final two games of this four-match stretch, which are at home to Italy on June 11 and Hungary on June 14.
“That very much depends on symptoms and how his breathing is when he’s back into training. Of course it affects everybody differently,” said Southgate.
“I think every team in the world are getting used to dealing with this situation really.”
