England stars break silence on World Cup exit as Marcus Rashford delivers verdict

Marcus Rashford has opened up on England's heart-breaking exit from the World Cup after the Three Lions crashed out of the tournament with a 2-1 defeat against France.

Goals from Aurelien Tchouameni and Olivier Giroud booked Les Bleus' place in the last-four where they will take on Morocco for a spot in the final. Harry Kane scored the Three Lions' only goal of the game, although he had the chance to take the game to extra-time and add his second from the penalty spot with moments to go.

However, the Tottenham forward blazed his spot-kick over the bar to condemn England to a frustrating defeat against the reigning world champions at the Al Bayt Stadium. There has been mixed reaction from supporters to the result, but some of the England squad have also opened up on bowing out of the tournament.

Manchester United star Rashford was one of the first players to take to social media and he has promised the Three Lions fans that they will "come again" ahead of the 2024 European Championships. The 24-year-old scored three times in five appearances at the World Cup, including twice against Wales in the group stages.

Rashford tweeted: "The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions, each and every one of our team gave everything we had to be ready for what was thrown at us, we got close, but not close enough. I’ll make a promise that we will come again! Thank you for the unconditional support."

Meanwhile, Declan Rice followed: "The greater the talent, the greater the aim. The greater the aim, the greater the pain along the path to reaching it. This is all part of the journey to us being successful as a team. Thank you to everyone for your incredible support. We gave it absolutely everything."

James Maddison was one of six England players who didn't play a minute at the World Cup, but he has taken to Instagram to thank the Three Lions fans for their support. Southgate decided to pick the Leicester City star in his 26-man squad after he scored seven times in his first 13 Premier League appearances this season.

"Tough night for us," Maddison said. "Pleasure to be a part of this group. Gutted it didn't end how we all wanted it too."

The 26-year-old also shared a messaged of support for Kane. He said: "No-one in world football I would have rather stood over that penalty. We win together and lose together."

Harry Maguire produced some excellent performances in Qatar and he has thanked Southgate for giving him the opportunity to represent England at a major tournament.

Maguire tweeted: "Last night hurt. Absolutely gutted. Special thanks to Gareth and you amazing fans who kept belief in me. I love my country and I hope we made you proud."

Captain Kane had also posted a message on social media taking full responsibility for his penalty miss. "Absolutely gutted," he said on Twitter. "We've given it everything and it’s come down to a small detail which I take responsibility for. There's no hiding from it, it hurts and it’ll take some time to get over it but that’s part of sport.

"Now it's about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thanks for all the support throughout the tournament - it means a lot."

Mason Mount failed to score or register an assist at the tournament but he had a major role to play in the 6-2 win over Iran in the Three Lions' opening game. He has also reflected on England's defeat after coming on as a late substitute in the defeat against France.

He said: "Waking up today, it still hurts just as much... the heart and determination of this team has been nothing short of inspiring, we wanted to go further, but it wasn’t to be.

"The support we felt this tournament pushed us more than ever, a special thank you to you all who were with us every step of the way. Proud to call this group not only my teammates, but my brothers. We'll go again. There are so many special moments ahead together. We are England."
