Ellis Genge has revealed that his glory moment was overshadowed by racial abuse on social media. The England prop captained Leicester to Premiership Final glory in his final game before joining Bristol.
Genge, who has mixed-race heritage, described it as the best day of his career - then turned on Twitter to find himself branded a “n****r”. Think it’s important to highlight that this is still a massive problem, from a legit account too,” he responded.
“Not here for a headhunt hence the black out, common occurrence and socials/law should come down on it.” Two years ago, recalling his youth in Bristol, Genge admitted to the BBC : “I still get that [racist abuse] now.
"You try and segregate yourself from all those people who are naive or ignorant enough to be racist, you try and stay away from it as much as you can, but you can’t shield yourself from everyone’s thoughts."
He went onto claim that on England’s 2018 tour to South Africa both he and Eddie Jones were subject to racial abuse.
“I remember after a game we were walking through one of the tunnels and they started hurling racist abuse at myself and a few of the other ethnic boys and Eddie himself,” he said.
“It is still very rife, especially in sport. Look, you can’t control that yourself, you just sort of need to put the message out there. “Like Raheem Sterling said, if you have got a platform, you can use it. It’s something that needs to be stamped out.”
